Bhubaneswar: The first phase of the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project will be completed by December 2027, Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi said here on Saturday.

She revealed after a review meeting that the metro will cover a 26-kilometer stretch in its initial phase.

The first phase will feature 20 stations, including three in Ekamra, four in Central Bhubaneswar, ten in North Bhubaneswar, and three in Cuttack.

Each station will reflect Odisha’s rich cultural and heritage themes.

A total of 13 trains with three coaches each will be deployed, capable of accommodating 95,000 passengers daily. The project, estimated to cost ₹6,256 crore, received approval from the Odisha Government in November 2023.

So far, ₹460 crore has been spent on the project, with the State Government contributing ₹250 crore in October 2023. An additional ₹350 crore is expected by March 2025, and ₹1,750 crore has been proposed for allocation in the 2025-26 financial year.

The project is being implemented through a collaboration between the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC), the Odisha State Government, and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Sarangi also reported that 92 acres of land have been acquired for the first phase, although possession of 15 acres is still pending. Of the total, 40 acres in Malipada have been allocated for the metro office and ongoing construction activities.

The State Government will fully fund this phase of the metro project. Funding for future phases, including potential contributions from the Central Government, will be determined later.
