Rourkela, April 1: Eager to contribute towards helping Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) sail through the tough market conditions successfully, ERW Pipe Plant is not only increasing its production performances but also enhancing its product profile.
The unit is venturing into fresh market segments by continuously developing products of newer dimensions and specifications through innovative technological endeavours. There is a regular feedback from the market about the increasing demand for pipes with a high D/T (diameter/thickness) ratio. However, many producers don’t go for it because the forming of pipes in higher D/T ratio especially, in the lower thickness ranges, leads to deformity & more rejection.
The ERW pipe plant collective decided to take up the challenge to make 5.0 mm thickness pipe in 16 inch Outer Diameter of 2.93 km length for M/s L&T Pvt. Ltd for the project Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Ltd, Chhabra and 5.2mm thickness pipes in 18 inch Outer Diameter of 0.865 km length for M/s Bina commercial Pvt Ltd. Specific measures like modifying the calibration parameters of forming and fin-pass sections were taken up to overcome the odds. With the help of PPC, Hot Strip Mill and other units the width of the HR Coil was also altered as per the demand.
The orders have been successfully executed in the month of March-2016 and the product profile of ERWPP has been thereby enhanced with the addition of these new thickness ranges. This enterprising venture has received a positive response from the market with RSP having already bagged an order to make 11.58 kms of pipes with 5.0 mm thickness in 16 inch Outer Diameter from M/s Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd, Hyderabad.
