New Delhi, Jan 6: In a big jolt to the students of the Sardar Rajas Medical College, Jaring in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, the Supreme Court today ordered against them attending classes in VIMSAR Burla, MKCG Medical College Berhampur, SCB Medical College Cuttack and three private medical colleges in the state till the next hearing on January 8.
Students of Sardar Rajas Medical College had managed to get admitted to the three government and three private medical colleges after much controversy.
“The Supreme Court has issued a notice for the next hearing on January 8. The Court in its interim order has directed students of Sardar Rajas Medical not to attend classes till its order is in effect. The Court has also directed the district collector to maintain law and order. The Court has served notices to the state government and the Medical Council of India (MCI) as respondents. It has also asked to apprise it of the ranks of the students of Sardar Rajas Medical College. The Court has further sought to know whether students of Sardar Rajas Medical College had higher or lower ranks in comparison to that of students studying in government medical colleges,” said Ashok Mohapatra lawyer for the petitioners.
“The Court in its notice to MCI in particular today has sought the ranking records system. The Court’s view is that students of lower ranks should not supersede better students with higher ranks,” said Kedarnath Tripathy, a lawyer in his comments on the apex court’s order.
“We have every respect for the apex court’s order. We hope that the court after hearing all parties will certainly pass a suitable order,” said Samir Reddy, a student of Sardar Rajas Medical College in his reaction on the apex court order.
Notably on December 14, students of three government medical colleges had filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) in Supreme Court, seeking the apex court’s intervention into the Sardar Rajas Medical College row.
In the SLP, the students had appealed to the apex court to direct the state government to stop the admission process of students of the Sardar Rajas Medical College in five other medical colleges.
