Bhubaneswar, March 29 : Bhubaneswar-Tirupati-Bhubaneswar Express via Visakhapatnam fitted with Boi-Toilets in all 22 Coaches has been flagged off today at Bhubaneswar Railway Station by a Technician Grade Employee of East Coast Railway Shri A. Krishna Rao who will be retiring soon in presence of Shri M. K. Poddar, Chief Rolling Stock Engineer (CRSE) of East Coast Railway & Shri S. P. Dwivedi, Addl. Divisional Railway Manager and Senior Officers of Khurda Road Railway Division.

As the train is connecting important tourist destinations, it has aptly been decided for its conversion as “Green Train” by providing all its coaches with Bio-Toilets for a Greener & Cleaner India. This train is a great initiative towards fulfilling the objectives of “Swachh Bharat Mission”.

Green toilet aims at Zero-defecation on to the ground, is environment-friendly, prevents damages to the track due to corrosion and no bad smell in toilets from the tanks, no infection of cockroaches and flies, effluent is free from odour and solid waste, no maintenance required, reduction in organic matter by 90% and no need for removal of solid waste.

The Bio-toilet System consists of a Bio-digester tank which contains anaerobic bacteria which converts solid human waste into liquid waste and some gases (Carbon Dioxide & Methane). The liquid waste is treated with Chlorine and gets dis-infected and is discharged out. The Gases get released into the atmosphere.

Earlier, East Coast Railway has provided this facility in 18496 Bhubaneswar-Rameswaram Express,18401 Puri-Okha Express, 18503 Visakhapatnam-Sai Nagar Shirdi Express, 18519 Visakhapatnam-LTT Express & 22869 Visakhapatnam-Chennai Express.
