TCS conducts technology-related Youth Survey in the capital: 10 things to know

Bhubaneswar, December 24, 2015: The TCS Youth Survey is one of the largest surveys in the country that captures the Digital habits of children between the age group of 12-18 years. Generation Z (Gen Z) is defined as the group born after 1995 – the current youth generation. TCS has been conducting the TCS Youth Survey with students across 15 cities, as part of the TCS IT Wiz Quiz. Below are some of the technology-related survey results from Bhubaneswar.

  1. The Smart Phones generation

Smartphones are the most coveted electronic gadget (82%) amongst Bhubaneswar teens. It is interesting to note that smart phones are also the most popular mode of accessing the internet (46%) closely followed by Desktops/ home PCs and laptops (44%).

  1. Bhubaneswar teens check in as Facebook Socialites

Facebook leads from the forefront (used by 93%) followed by Google+ (used by 62%). An interesting observation was that boys are more active online and on social networking sites as compared to the girls.

  1. The Blue Canary spreads its wings in Bhubaneswar

Twitter is gaining popularity amongst Teen Twitteratis in Bhubaneswar with 53% respondents having twitter accounts. Twitter is more popular amongst Teen Boys (58%) in Bhubaneswar as compared to girls (36%).

  1. What’s up Whatsapp?

Whatsapp is by far the most popular instant messaging platform (73%) used by Bhubaneswar Gen Z. It is distantly followed by SMS (12%).

  1. Bhubaneswar Gen Z says, “see you online”

31% of the respondents spend at least an hour everyday online. 40% of them respond to notifications within 5 minutes of receiving them. 39% of the respondents online activities are monitored by parents and 53% of the respondents’ parents have access to their online accounts.

An interesting trend seen amongst Bhubaneswar teens is to break-free from organized learning environment and move towards the online learning space indicating the popularity that DIY and collaborative learning is gaining. 29% of the respondents use video chat to learn a new hobby & 16% go online to do school assignments.

Face to face communication is still the most preferred way of communication with friends (38%) as compared to phone calls and social media.

  1. Brands take a note: Gen Z are accomplished multi-channel shoppers

90% of the respondents said that they shop online. Electronic gadgets (59%) were the most popular buy for Gen Z closely followed by Books (53%) and clothes (51%).

  1. Traditional media still the King

Overall, TV and newspapers were the most used means of consuming news (75%) followed by online sources (38%) and links from friends/ family on Facebook (35%).

  1. Just another myth: Professional courses losing charm

Interestingly a higher percentage of girls (53%) as compared to boys (49%) wished to pursue professional courses.
