Bhubaneswar: July 25: Two separate snake bite incidents in Odisha resulted in the deaths of three children and serious injuries to a woman. According to sources, two brothers named Gaurang (14) and Saubhagya (8) died in the first incident in the Deogarh district on Monday night after being bitten by a snake while they were sleeping in their home. They were rushed to the Deogarh hospital by their family members, where they both passed away during treatment. The bodies were sent for a post-mortem after the police filed an unnatural death report.
The second incident happened in the Mayurbhanj district’s Katuria village, which is within the Sharata police jurisdiction. On Monday night, a toddler and his mother were both bitten by a poisonous snake. The mother was taken to Baripada Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition, while the toddler passed away.
Last week, three students of a residential coaching center in Keonjhar district died after they were bitten by a snake while they were asleep.
Following numerous snakebite incidents, the state department of health and family welfare issued an advisory to chief district medical officers and asked the education department to maintain a clean school environment. The health department has also requested that schools take safety measures to keep snakes off the property. Additionally, the health department has instructed all CDMOs to keep an adequate supply of anti-venom medications at the community health centres.
