Burla, May 17: Since yesterday at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VISMAR) here, a corpse of an under-trial prisoner has been lying on the ICU ward bed. The name of the deceased is Subash Patel. He died at 3:05 am yesterday. But due to un-fulfillment of legal formalities and protest from the Patel’s family, the post-mortem could not be done.
Patel had been lodged in the Sambalpur circle jail from October 2016 on charges of robbery. The jailer there, Sushant Rout said that, on May 11, 2017 Patel complained of stomach ache. He was admitted to the Sambalpur Sadar Hosital and was later taken to the Burla medical on May 12. There, he succumbed to his treatment. The jailer further stated that as Patel’s condition started worsening, he was shifted to the ICU on May 12 where he died on May 16 at 3.05 am. On the contrary, his family members did not cooperate to carry out his post-mortem. However, the hospital staff have had talks with them and they have agreed and thus the post-mortem will be carried out today.
