In a tragic accident, two farmers were killed in a lightning strike in Bhanjanagar area of Ganjam district. The incident took place in the Belguntha police station area at around noon today, killing two people in separate places. While working in the field, lightning struck suddenly and their life was prematurely lost.Among the dead was a woman. The deceased were identified as Praful Kumar Swain, 52, son of the late Ram Swain of Kurulai village in Dhumuchai panchayat and Sabita Dakua, 40, wife of Trinath Dakua of Tanarada village.
Praful who had gone to work early today, was returning back home because of heavy rains in the area. while returning back, he was struck by lightning near the village and fell to the ground. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. Similarly, lightning struck while Sabita was working on her land. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where the doctor pronounced her dead. Police after arriving at the scene have investigated the matter. On the other hand, the deceased’s family have requested for a government assistance in this matter, as the duo belonged to very poor families.
