Bhubaneswar, Aug 5: A low pressure belt created over the Bay of Bengal caused rainfall in most parts of Odisha in the last 24 hours thus disrupting normal life here. Sambalpur experienced a torrid climate due to extremely heavy rainfall. As per MeT office, the city recorded a 240mm measure of rainfall in the last 24 hours. In fact rain water has even caused water lodging in the Nuapada slum area, Housing Board Colony, Mudipada , Jagannath Colony and Khetrajpur creating difficulties for the residents there. At some places in these areas, household articles have been found floating on rainwater. In the Malkangiri district, water levels of all rivers have risen as a result of continuous spells of water since Wednesday. Transportation between Kalimela and MV-79 is stopped due to 4-feet level of water flowing across Kankarkonda and MV-90 bridges. A possibility of disruption pertains in transportation to several other places in the district if the rain continues for the next 48 hours. Keonjhar district students of a private school staged a road blockade after rainwater entered the classrooms hampering studies. Cuttack experienced floods in Badambadi, Pattapola, Meria Bazar, Khan Nagar, Roxy Lane and Bajrakabati areas. Due to heavy rains, there was thin attendance in almost all educational institutions in the city. Similar conditions were noticed in Bhubaneswar where rainwater entered houses in areas of Acharya Vihar, Jayadev Vihar, Nayapalli, Bomikhal and Laxmisagar.
Meanwhile, to remove stagnant rainwater accumulated in areas, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) authorities have engaged 200 motor pumps while high voltage pumps have inculcated in the worst affected areas of Bajrakabati, Matru Bhawan and Matagajapur.
