350 houses damaged in Mizoram squall

Aizawl, April 18: Pre-monsoon storm accompanied by squall and hailstorm has left trails of destruction at Mamit in the Mizoram-Bangladesh-Tripura border recently damaging at least 350 houses, official sources said.

At least 170 houses were destroyed in West Phaileng of which 40 houses were completely damaged, officials have said.

In Mamit town, 65 private homes were partially damaged while 16 homes were completely destroyed and 21 government buildings were damaged, they said adding a church building of the Church of God (Seventh Day) was completely destroyed by a strong wind in Mamit town.

Many houses were also damaged in Khawhnai, Tuirum, Ailawng, Dapchhuah and West Serzawl villages.

Most of the power transmission lines were damaged in Mamit town with at least ten electric pole uprooted, leaving the town completely powerless, she said.
