Work-plan prepared to construct 2000 km roads per month

Chief Secretary directed to ensure strict implementation of 5-year maintenance norms.

Bhubaneswar: November 22: After bagging the 1st position at national level in implementation of PMGSY-I  for the year 2017-18, Government of Odisha has initiated steps for upgradation of rural roads at block level under PMGSY-II.  The detail project report prepared for up-gradation of 4404 km roads were discussed and approved in a high level meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Sri Aditya Prsad Padhi in secretariat conference hall today wherein Principal Secretary Rural Development Dr Mona Sharama outlined the projects for discussion. Giving nod to the projects, Chief Secretary Sri Padhi directed the department to prepare detail work-schedule for completion of 2000 kms of PMGSY road per month in the current working season. The engineers of rural development were further directed to strictly implement the norms regarding 5-year maintenance of PMGSY roads after their laying. Chief Secretary Sri Padhi asked the engineers to keep strict vigil over the quality of construction and maintenance regularly.

Principal Secretary Dr Sharma said that these upgradation projects would be financed both by Central and State Government on 60:40 basis. Target was set to complete the works in phased manner by March, 2020. Chief Engineer Sri Bijaya Narayan Mishra said that the projects would be sent for final approval of the Ministry of Rural Development by end of this month.

Review revealed that around 48452 kms of roads and 241 bridges have been constructed in the State under PMGSY-I by end of October, 2018. With these roads, 14737 unconnected habitations have been connected with good quality roads. An amount of around Rs.20892 cr has been invested in construction of these roads and bridges. The projects for connecting more 2154 habitations have been taken up.
