New Delhi, March 8: A fibroid tumour weighing 9.4 kg was removed from the uterus of a woman after a marathon surgery here.
“This is the world’s largest fibroid of the uterus removed laproscopically. The tumour grew for about six years, weighed 9.4 kg and was benign in nature,” said advanced gynae endoscopic surgeon BB Dash, at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, who led the surgery on the 117-kg woman.
Since the patient is heavily built, she could not feel the tumour till a few weeks ago when she noticed an outgrowth from her abdomen.
“On examination, we diagnosed the growth as a gigantic fibroid,” Dr Anuradha Kapur, HoD, Obstetrics and Gynaecology said.
The patient was operated on February 12 and the surgery took 8 hours. She was discharged on February 17.
“Laparoscopic removal was technically challenging as obese people have a much higher risk of facing complications during surgery, such as surgical site infections, venous thromboembolism (obstruction of a blood vessel by a clot) and wound complications,” said Dr Dash.
Uterine fibroid sizes vary from the size of a coin to the size of a melon and in women who are even slightly overweight, fibroid tumours can be mistaken for weight gain or pregnancy, Dr Kapur said.
