Bhubaneswar: January 03:
Talcher is currently the most polluted city in India. Several other cities in Odisha have also reported alarming levels of air pollution. Recent data show the state has surpassed previous pollution records, with multiple cities reporting Air Quality Index (AQI) levels ranging from very poor to severe.
Talcher and Angul have been identified as the most polluted cities in India, raising serious health and environmental concerns. Four cities in Odisha are among the six most polluted nationwide, all classified as ‘very poor’ for air quality.
Recent data show Talcher recorded an AQI of 355, the highest in the country. Angul followed with an AQI of 329, and Baripada reported 324. Major urban centres were also affected: Cuttack registered 304 and Bhubaneswar 302, both within the ‘very poor’ category.

Experts warn that high pollution levels can cause severe health effects, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Industrial emissions, coal-based activities, vehicle pollution, and adverse weather are major contributors to declining air quality in the region.
Authorities advise residents to limit outdoor activities, use masks, and take other precautions. This situation underscores the urgent need for stronger pollution-control measures and improved monitoring to protect public health across Odisha.
