Rourkela, Feb 25: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Wednesday announced two major projects worth Rs 660 crore for the overall development of the Odisha’s steel city of Rourkela.
“We are committed to make Rourkela a model city and in that regard work on a Rs 400 crores underground sewerage system will begin soon,” Patnaik told a public meeting here.
The first tender of the project has been completed.
Patnaik said a housing project costing Rs 260 crore would begin here soon for the poor and slum dwellers. Besides, 50,000 houses would be constructed for workers engaged in construction activities.

The chief minister inagurated a number of projects in Sundargarh district, including a bridge over Koel river built at a cost of over Rs 12 crore. He also distributed cheques to construction workers and kendu leaf workers.
The Chief Minister, on a day-long visit to Sundergarh district made these announcements during the Nirmana Shramik Saptaha (Construction Workers’ Week ) programme held in Rourkela Birsa Munda stadium.
Earlier in the day, Patnaik inaugurated a bridge over the Koel river in Jhirpani area, constructed at a cost of Rs 12.6 crore.
Union minister Jual Oram, Industry minister Prafulla Mallick, MLA Mangala Kisan, MLA Subrat Tarai, RDA chairman Sarada Prasad Nayak were also present during the occasion.
The chief minister also inaugurated 17 projects and laid foundation stones for various welfare projects worth Rs 120 crore in the district, according to official sources.
Under the scheme, the State government will provide an assistance of Rs 1 lakh to each registered construction worker of the state for house construction.
Notably, the chief minister had launched Pucca Ghara Yojana (concrete housing scheme) for construction workers of the state in the capital city on February 20.
He also laid foundation stones of several mega irrigation projects in Kalahandi and Bolangir districts besides several road and bridges on February 18.
