Balasore, Dec 26: Today, nuclear capable ballistic missile ‘Agni-5’ has been successfully test fired form a mobile launcher form the launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island of Odisha coast. The missile, developed indigenously and weighing 50 tone, was test fired at 11.05 AM. Earlier, three other tests of this long range missile have been conducted on April, 19, 2012, September 15, 2013 and January 31, 2015 and this is the fourth developmental and second canisterised trial
Having capability to hit a target of more than 5,000 km, Agni- 5 covered Asia and parts of Europe and Africa, informed Defence Research and Development Organization. It is equipped with latest technologies like the redundant navigation systems, very high accuracy Ring Laser Gyro based Inertial Navigation System (RINS) and the most modern and accurate Micro Navigation System (MINS) ensured the Missile reach the target point within a few meters of accuracy and also helped for better navigation and guidance facilities. It can carry a nuclear warhead weighing more than one tone.
Till now, India has in its possession am arsenal of the ‘Agni’ series, first the Agni-1 with 700 range, second the Agni-2 having capability to target more than 2,000 km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 having a target capability mo hit more than 2,500km to more than 3500km range in its armory. Agni-5, the latest one will be introduced into this lot after conducting a few more tests.
