Nabarangpur, Oct 10: In yet another incident that questions the government’s various schemes meant for pregnant woman and infants, a woman of Umerkote block in Nabarangpur district delivered a baby in a tractor on Sunday as the ambulance didn’t turn up to reach the patient in time.
According to sources, the family of the patient Belanti Majhi of Thipapani village contacted ‘102’ and ‘108’ ambulance to take her to the hospital when she felt labour pain around 6 am on Sunday morning. However, after waiting for a long time, the ambulance didn’t turn up.
Left with no other choice, the family members decided to take her in a tractor to the hospital. But Belanti delivered a girl child in the tractor on the way to the hospital.
The 108 ambulance van reached after an hour long delay and took the mother and the newborn to cover the remaining distance to the hospital.
As per Dr Sumant Kumar Raul of Umerkote hospital, the mother was anaemic for which adequate medicines and iron tablets were given to her in the hospital. After her condition stabilized she was discharged from the hospital.
