Cheetahs From Namibia Reaching India; PM Modi Will Release In Kuno National Park
September 16

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release Cheetahs brought from Namibia, in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday under Project Cheetah, which is world’s first inter-continental large wild carnivore translocation project. This day is also the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to revitalise and diversify India’s wildlife and its habitat include the introduction of wild cheetahs. In India, the cheetah was deemed extinct in 1952. Cheetahs from Namibia will be introduced; they were imported as part of an MoU signed earlier this year. They will support the restoration of India’s open forest and grassland ecosystems. This will support biodiversity preservation and improve ecosystem services like soil moisture retention, water security, and carbon sequestration.

The eight Cheetahs will be released in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.
The special cargo flight carrying Cheetahs will land in Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh. From Gwalior, the big cats will be transported by a helicopter to Kuno National Park in Sheopur, officials said.
