On Thursday, August 4, 2022, Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana recommended to the government that Justice Uday Umesh Lalit be named as his successor as the 49th Chief Justice of India.
When the two met for tea at the Supreme Court in the morning before court, Chief Justice Ramana gave Justice Lalit a copy of his letter of recommendation, dated August 3.
At 9.30 p.m. on August 3, 2022, Chief Justice Ramana got a communication from Law Minister Kiren Rijiju seeking his recommendation for the appointment of the next top judge.
Chief Justice Ramana is retiring on August 26, 2022. Justice Lalit is the senior most judge in the Supreme Court now.
According to the Memorandum, the procedure starts with the Union Law Minister asking the departing CJI for his or her advice on the upcoming appointment.
If nominated, Justice Lalit would serve for little about three months. On November 8, 2022, he will retire.
