
Keonjhar, Jan 5: Last Thursday, Rina Naik, wife of Ramesh Naik, was in deep grief when she was told that she gave birth to a still born at the Keonjhar District Headquarters hospital.
But after the couple left for their village Siriabahal in Telkoi block to perform the last rites, they were informed that the baby was actually alive.
Later it was found by hospital authorities that the staff had mistakenly handed over a dead child of another woman.
Rina was called back and the infant was handed over to her.
The locals have demanded an inquiry into the episode.
According to reports, Rina was admitted to the District Hospital on December 15 and delivered a male baby the same day and was discharged from hospital on December 22.
She returned to hospital on December 29 for another check up and seek doctor’s advice as her baby was ill.
The doctors informed her on December 31 that her baby has died in the SNCU.
Carrying the dead child the couple returned home and performed the funeral rites.
Suddenly on January 3 Rina received a phone call from the hospital to collect her child from the SNCU.
The couple rushed to the hospital and the baby was handed over to it.
The doctors in the hospital apologized to the couple for the mistake and told media that the incident was not intentional. In fact the child of another woman named Rina Naik, from champua died on December 31 during treatment.
Instead of handing over the dead child to Rina Naik of Champua, the baby was handed over to Rina Naik of Telkoi. But soon the mistake was noticed.
However, the district Collector has ordered an investigation into the matter.
