Odisha Government tabled a resolution in the House regarding the demand for caste-based census and removal of 50 per cent cap on reservation.
SC and ST Development, and Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Jagannath Saraka moved the resolution amid ruckus by Opposition parties.
The House will now send the resolution to the Odisha State Commission for Backward Classes from where it will be sent to the Centre.
SCs and STs are having 22.5 per cent and 16.25 per cent of Odisha’s entire population whereas OBC/SEBC population comprises a major share of the remaining population.
As said by Minister, reservation for SEBCs is not in proportion to their population. For which, they are not getting suitable reservation in government jobs and other facilities.
A delegation BJD had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed regarding their demand for the removal of 50 percent cap on reservation and conducting a caste-based census for socially and educationally backward classes (SEBCs).
Odisha has been strongly demanding before centre for caste-based census and removal of 50 per cent cap on reservation and it is gaining momentum day by day.
