HC Relaxes Age Limit For Police Constable

Cuttack: The Orissa High Court in a landmark judgement relaxed the maximum age limit to six years for the post of Police constable in Odisha. The Odisha Police State Selection Board (OPSSB) has been directed to issue a fresh notification for the same.

Earlier, on September 22 a notification was released to fill as many as 1360 Police constable posts in different battalions in Odisha. The Orissa High Court has passed a judgement to relax the age limit further to six years keeping in view the disruption in recruitment for the Covid-19 pandemic.

Candidates of all categories will be given the age relaxation. The OPSSB will make necessary provisions for the online application procedure of the candidates. A bench of judges headed by Dr. Justice Sanjeeb Kumar Panigrahi pronounced the hearing on the basis of more than 40 cases by one Bisweswar Biswal and others.

The candidates with lower age limit of 18 years and the maximum age limit of 23 years as on January 1, 2024 were eligible in the previous notification released. After the judgement, six years age will be relaxed for all the candidates.

Earlier in 2018, the recruitment for Odisha police constable was conducted. So after repeated applications to the Court this age relaxation was done. Senior advocates Pami Rath, Priyaranjan Singh, Biplab P.B. Bahali, Rajeeb Rath, Khirod Kumar Rout and others represented the aggrieved.
