Bhubaneswar, Aug 17: On one side the Mahanadi issue has created a tussle between Odisha and Chhattisgarh; now on the other side Gullu hydro power project undertaken by Chhattisgarh on the lb River has created a threatening environment on this tributary of Mahanadi.
As per the sources, Rs 200 crore Gullu Hydro Electric project is being constructed in north east region of Chhattisgarh since 2011 and by this project in the Jashpur district, around 24 MW of power is expected to be generated. By 2017, the project is expected to be finished.
After power generation, the water of Gullu Fall will be diverted to a reservoir in Chhattisgarh for irrigation work, the project’s officials informed.
Experts informed that water carrying capacity of the Ib River that flows through Raigarh and Jashpur of Chhattisgarh and Jharsuguda and Sundargarh of Odisha will be affected after the execution of the project.
The Congress Party showed concern towards this matter yesterday and had held a bandh in the issue.
Prafulla Majhi, Talsara Congress MLA, said that flow of River water would decrease due to this project. Thus, the project is a matter of concern for Odisha.
According to the information in the National Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Authority, for the purpose of evacuation of power to state grid, transmission line would be set up at a substation in Kunkuri town, located 18 KM from the project site.
