Increase in Bird Count at Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park

Pattamundai, Sept 3: At the time of the Annual Bird Census, around 1, 03,853 country birds have been counted at Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district. During this time, 42,408 birds and 61, 445 hatchlings were found in 21,204 nests at the national park.

This monsoon, the national park witnessed a footfall of more than 7,416 birds as compared to last year when it was all together 96,437 birds. It’s stated that 11 species of herons, grey cranes, little cormorants and king-fisher in large numbers have barged the national park. Like every year, herons in mass laid eggs at the national park. This year, many birds have laid eggs at Mathiadia area. The census has been conducted at around 21,204 nests in 2097 trees at the park.

This was informed by Bhitarkanika National Park’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) named Bimal Prasana Acharya.
