Mumbai: India on Wednesday unveiled its stealth guided missile destroyer INS Kochi.Defence Minister Manohar Parikar inaugurated the warship at a function here.He said on the occasion that the navy has chalked out an indignation plan for the next 15 years.
The navy has chalked out an indignation plan for the next 15 years, he said adding there is renewed enthusiasm in the defence production units, PSUs and private sector. Parikar said India will develop a real blue-water navy which will dominate the Indian Ocean region. He admitted that the country’s navy still lack in fire power. Parikar also spoke of a ‘mixed success’ on the missile system technology front. INS Kochi is the second ship of the Kolkata-class (Project 15 A) guided missile destroyers.
Navy’s in-house organization Directorate of Naval Design designed the ship and Mazagon Dock Ship Builders Ltd in Mumbai constructed it.The ship incorporates new design concepts for improved survivability, stealth, sea-keeping and manoeuvrability.
The majestic ship spans 164 meters in length and 17 meters at the beam and is propelled by four gas turbines and designed to achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship has a complement of about 40 officers and 350 sailors.
