Innovation and high deliverables are key factors for effective CSR: Dr. Chand, Nalco CMD

Bhubaneswar, Dec 5: “Quantifying CSR activities is critical for its success. Intention, innovation and low administrative cost with high deliverables are key factors for effectiveness of any CSR activities,” said Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand, CMD, Nalco while addressing the participants at the valedictory session of Management Development Programme “Building Corporate Strategy for Effective CSR”, organized by International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi, at its Bhubaneswar Campus, on Friday. In his address, Dr Chand also underscored the importance of implementing strategic and effective CSR activities. Besides, CSR should be considered as part of business process and it is essential to implement business excellence in the process of CSR to get the desired result, said Dr. Chand.

“Amendment of Companies Act incorporating CSR under Section 135 and Schedule-VII have made CSR mandatory for the organization, but what matters is not the statutory compulsion, it is the mission mode in which CSR is to be done to identify the beneficiary and deliver the benefits that makes it effective,” expressed  Dr. Chand to the participants of the seminar.

Informing about Nalco CSR activities, Dr. Chand said that for Nalco, CSR is not an obligation but the company is committed to act as a partner in the progress. The company is first in the Country to have adopted a Board approved CSR policy, which is fully compliant with Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) guidelines & Companies Act, 2013. He shared various CSR activities of Nalco including development of iconic city Puri and shrine of Lord Jagannath Temple,  ‘Nalco ki Ladli’ scheme to support meritorious girl students from BPL families, under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ programme.  Dr. Chand also shared with the participants about company’s initiatives to address the endemic problem of fluoride contamination of water in Angul sector, using breakthrough Nano technology.

The three-day programe was attended by senior officials of various state & central PSUs and Government organizations. Dr. Chand handed over the certificates to the participants.  Among others, Prof. Ramesh Behl, Director, IMI-B, Shri S.S. Mohanty, Vice Chairman & MD, NINL, Shri K.S. Patro, Director (HR), ECL were present on the occasion. Prof. Arun Kumar Rath, Programme Director, IMI delivered the keynote address.
