Bhubaneswar, Dec 26: Normal life was hit in Kandhamal by the bandh called by Kui Samaj Samnwaya Samiti (KSSS) today.
The strike call was given by the tribal organization after its talks failed with the district administration over fulfillment of its 34-point charter of demands.
Streets across the tribal dominated district wore a deserted look with shops, business establishments, banks and restaurants remaining closed during the dawn to dusk bandh.
“We are fully alert and have deployed sufficient forces to avoid any untoward incidents,” said Kandhamal SP KB Singh.
No untoward incident was reported from any part of the district during he bandh, officials said.
The district administration made elaborate arrangements for maintenance of peace and security in the area as the bandh was called on Christmas.
Vehicles entering the district were checked thoroughly and security was tightened around churches. Police patrolling has been tightened in local areas, the SP said.
The KSSS demand include strict action against those who have used fake caste certificates to get government jobs and avail other government benefits.
