New Delhi: October 12:
The Union Education Ministry urges schools in States and Union Territories (UTs) to use Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to collect admission and examination fees. This move modernises administrative processes and makes payment easier for parents and students.
In a letter to States, UTs, and bodies such as NCERT, CBSE, KVS, and NVS, the Department of School Education and Literacy stresses using digital payment options—including UPI, mobile wallets, and net banking—to simplify schools’ financial transactions.
This move is part of broader efforts to make schooling life easier through reforms in laws, policies, and institutions. Digital payment systems are expected to offer more convenience and transparency, allowing parents to pay remotely without school visits. The plan also aims to improve financial literacy by introducing stakeholders to digital transactions, supporting a digitally empowered and inclusive education system.
The Ministry highlighted that moving from cash to digital payments will modernise school administration. This supports the government’s goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047—a citizen-centric, digitally advanced nation. States and UTs are encouraged to promptly set up secure and transparent digital payment systems in schools by establishing dedicated procedures and sharing progress with the Ministry. This marks a significant step toward a modernised education ecosystem.
