Antalya (Turkey), Nov 16: India on Sunday made a case for united global effort to combat the menace of terrorism.
Modi said the entire world stand united in strongly condemning the dreadful acts of terrorism in Paris… The entire humanity must stand together as one against terrorism. The need for a united global effort to combat terrorism has never been more urgent.
Addressing BRICKS leaders on the sidelines of the G-20 summit Modi said that India, which takes over the Chairmanship of BRICS from February 1, 2016, will accord priority to combating terrorism.
Combating terrorism must also be a priority for BRICS nations, he said.
Besides Modi, BRICS meeting is being attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Jacob Zuma and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
Modi also grieved the loss of life in Sinai. Ankara and Beirut are also reminders of terror’s growing spread and impact, he said adding BRICS stands for Building Responsive, Inclusive, Collective Solutions which will be the theme of the 5-nation
group when India assumes its presidency next year.
A Goldman Sachs’ economist had coined the BRIC acronym to represent world’s four main emerging economic powers – Brazil, Russia, India and China.
In 2011, another major emerging economy South Africa joined the group and ‘BRIC’ became ‘BRICS’.
“There was a time when the logic of BRICS and its lasting capacity were being questioned. We have provided proof of the relevance and value of BRICS through our actions. And, this has come at a time of huge global challenges,” the Indian Prime Minister said.
BRICS partner, China, will take over the Presidency of G20 in December 2015.
He said BRICS Bank will fund inclusive needs of emerging nations.
India will guide the BRICS nations’ USD 50 billion New Development Bank – a rival to the World Bank – to finance “inclusive and responsive” needs of particularly emerging economies, Modi said.
