Bhubaneswar, March 14: Unidentified miscreants, suspected to be Maoists, have killed a former Sarpanch in Jeypore early on Sunday, police reports here said.
The throat of former Sarpanch identified as Gobardhan Bhumia was slit by the miscreants in Mantriamba area, the report said.
Tension prevailed in the area after the news of the killing spread and police reached the spot.
Meanwhile, as many as 57 supporters, including 25 women, today surrendered before the police in Malkangiri district, reports here said.
They surrendered before SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra, and SDPO Madkar Sandeep Sampat.
There are 11 militia members and two village committee members among them. The remaining are people who supported the Maoists as progress never reached them,” said Mohapatra speaking to reporters.
“We will rehabilitate them under the surrender and rehabilitation policy of Odisha Government and take necessary steps to ensure the welfare policies of the government reach them,” he added.
Notably, 19 Maoist sympathisers had surrendered on Saturday.
A total of 315 Maoist supporters and militia members have surrendered in the past week only.
