Odia Neurosurgeon Dr. Basant Kumar Misra Wins Prestigious AANS Award 

Bhubaneswar: Dr Basant Kumar Misra, the Odisha born neurosurgeon who is the chief of surgery at the PD Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre in Mumbai has been honoured with the prestigious American Association of Neurological Surgeons’ International Lifetime Achievement Award in Neurosurgery.

The Odia lad is the first Indian physician to receive the prestigious AANS honor. Keeping in view of the rising covid cases, the award was conferred to him virtually at a virtual ceremony during the AANS Annual Scientific Meeting 2021 held in Orlando, Florida this week. 

Dr. Basant, the chief of surgery, head of the department of neurosurgery, and Gamma knife radiosurgery, PD Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mumbai, hails from Bhubaneswar. He is a proud recipient of the prestigious Dr BC Roy national Award. Misra who completed his MBBS from VIMSAR, Burla and Master of Surgery from Delhi University is the son of the former vice-chancellor of OUAT and a great economist and litterateur Baidyanath Misra. 

Other than a neurosurgeon he also holds many other designations in numerous medical societies. He is currently serving as the president of the Asian-Australian Society of Neurological Surgeons, President of the World Federation of Skull Base Societies and is also the first vice president of the World Federation of Neurological Societies. 

Notably, Misra is the first surgeon to have successfully performed the Computer-Guided Aneurysm surgery.
