New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, Sep 15: According to the latest sample registration system report for 2014 released by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (SRS), Odisha ranks the second position in infant mortality rate in the country, Madhya Pradesh being the highest in India. The death rate of girls stands at 53 in villages while its 34 for the cities is 34. It can be seen that villages are facing more deaths than cities due to high malnutrition rate and poor access to health services. Assam also stands second in infant deaths along with Odisha, followed by Uttar Pradesh at the third position, Rajasthan at fourth and Chhattisgarh at the fifth.

Notably, Infant mortality rate is the number of deaths of infants under one year per 1,000 live births. It is the figure to measure a state’s health and for Odisha, the rate is 49.
