Bhubaneswar: 05 November:
The Odisha government has increased the minimum price guaranteed to farmers for rice for the ongoing Kharif season 2025–26. Regular paddy will get ₹3,169 per 100 kg, up from ₹3,100, while higher-quality paddy will receive ₹3,189 per 100 kg. All rice bought from farmers this season will use these new prices, according to the Department of Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare.
The enhancement follows the Centre’s decision to set the national MSP at ₹2,369/quintal. Additionally, the Odisha government has introduced an input subsidy of ₹800 per quintal. Local farmers will thus receive ₹3,169/quintal to offset rising production costs.
“The increase aims to safeguard farmers’ interests and ensure fair remuneration for their produce,” the department’s circular stated, adding that the move aligns with the state’s broader policies to promote agricultural sustainability and income security.
Paddy types are divided into ‘Common’ and ‘Grade A’ based on how long they are compared to how wide they are (called the length-to-breadth ratio). If the grain is at least 2.5 times longer than it is wide, it is ‘Grade A’ If it’s less, it’s ‘Common.’ Under the new system, the minimum price paid to farmers (MSP) is ₹2,369 per 100 kg for Common paddy and ₹2,389 per 100 kg for Grade A. Both categories also receive an extra ₹800 per 100 kg to help with production costs.
