OHRC seeks report from govt on sunstroke deaths in 17 years

Bhubaneswar, April 6: The severity of the sunstroke cases in the State, can be gauged easily from the fact that an unprecedented 3,084 persons have died due to heat stroke in the last 17 years in the State while the Government has no idea and precautionary measures in the case, revealed a case which has been heard in the Orissa State Human Rights Commission (OSHRC).

While, the State Government has been unable to fight the calamity. The commission has shown concerns regarding this serious aspect. The commission has ordered the Revenue Department and Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) to take immediate action against the backdrop of such scenario.

Notably, renowned lawyer, Nishikanta Mishra had filed a petition in the OSHRC saying, that during 1998 to 2015, in the State, more than 3,000 persons have fallen prey to the severity of the heat waves.

OSHRC working president Justice Birakishore Mishra heard the case while issuing a notice to the SRC and Revenue Department. He had ordered them to furnish information regarding steps taken to ensure minimal casualties due to heat strokes in all these years within four weeks.
