Puri, Dec 3: When a four-year-old boy died after being bit and torn by a pack of stray dogs in the backyard of his house at Jagannath Colony here, finally the Puri municipality woke up and became alert. He gave out strict orders to enforce the guidelines which led to the curbing of these stray dogs thus reducing the menace in the city, which has been grappling with problem despite the civic body being granted assistance and issued guidelines from the government for the same. Officially it is revealed, that the Urban Development department has granted Rs 3.8 lakh to the civic body for sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs. However, this resolution was only passed but no action has been initiated on it thus unfortunately the stray dog menace kept on increasing in the city. Following the incident, the Puri Municipality has finally asked the chief district veterinary medical officer to prepare an action plan for immediate sterilization and vaccination of the stray dogs. Besides that the Maltipatpur Auto drivers association has launched a drive to catch all stray dogs. The members have caught as many as 30 stray dogs from Jagannath colony. Moreover, the Nagrik Sachetan Manch has demanded Rs 5 lakh compensation for the family of the 4-year-old killed by stray dogs.
