Safety of women in Odisha questioned as 6 rapes filed each day in 2016

Bhubaneswar, Mar 29: In an average six rapes have been filed every day in 2016 thus questioning the safety of women in Odisha. Yesterday the White Paper was  presented by the Home department in the Odisha Assembly that witnessed a marginal rise in crimes as 1,03,602 cases have been registered in 2016 in comparison to last year which had 1,03,200 cases registered. However, there was a fall in the number of rape cases in 2016. It went down to 2144 in 2016 as compared to last year when it were 2184. Likewise, was the case with murder as there was a drop with 1328 murder cases been registered in 2016 while it was 1473 in 2015. Also, Odisha CM stated during the Home Department’s budgetary discussion in the Assembly 2016 had a much more peaceful law and order situation. However, BJP and Congress on the other hand targeted the State Government for the change in law and order situation here. BJP leader Pradip Purohit stated that in the White Paper the ruling BJD has admitted that at many places the Maoist and law and order situation has deteriorated in the state. But senior BJD leaders like Amar Satpathy refuted the allegations. The Home department’s White Paper report further stated that there is subsequent progress in Maoists situation. Naxal related cases have been recorded in 11 districts. In 7 districts of Odisha, the Maoists are under control and in 4 districts there have not been naxal incidents.33 ultras were also brought down in the counter operations by the security forces in Odisha. There were 4,004 of burglary 9,044 of theft, 3,197 of swindling, 10,532 of motor vehicle accidents and 68,861 miscellaneous cases reported during 2016.
