Bhubaneswar, Aug 1: The Congress on Sunday raised questions to the BJD government for allowing the Chhattisgarh government to construct barrages on the upper catchment area on Mahanadi leading to issues between the two states to get more boiled up over the pertaining issue.  It was said by Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president, Prasad Harichandan at the Congress Bhawan here. He further added that  though the neighboring government had officially informed the Odisha government of its proposed plans during three occasions, then also the latter did not take up the issue rather remained silent on it.

On the contrary, BJD leader, Rabi Narayan Nanda said that it’s state government which is taking all possible steps for suppressing the demands of the Chhattisgarh government to the Centre to stop construction of barrages and dams in order to not hamper the interests of the people of Odisha therefore the opposition party be it Congress should refrain from giving such disputed comments to the media. Stating that the Hirakud dam receives 94 percent of Mahanadi water during monsoon and 6 percent during non-monsoon season, he said that the construction of projects on the upper catchments will seriously affect the flow of non-monsoon water to the Hirakud reservoir.
