Bhubaneswar, Nov 4: The Birla Global University Bill 2015, passed by the Odisha Legislative Assembly and assented by the Governor on 5th February 2016, has given the legal sanction for creation of the University. The Birla Global University, set up by the Birla Academy of Art and Culture , Kolkata, is a nationally reputed organization promoting art, culture and education in India. The academy has several schools around India, hospitals, temples and higher education institution such as Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) that is on national and international map. Established in 1964 to promote visual arts, culture, literature and other fine arts, the Academy, in its ten-storied building, overlooking the famous “Rabindra Sarobar” in Calcutta, possesses a unique collection of ancient Indian sculptures, miniature paintings, bronzes, textiles, terracotta etc. There is also a gallery of International Modern Art. Programmes covering different fields of fine arts, literature, lectures, discourses on religious and spiritual subjects, etc. are being held by this institution every year.
The Birla Global University aims to work towards high standards of knowledge creation under different Schools with a fair degree of autonomy. It is envisaged that at the outset the University will have School of Management, School of Architecture & Planning, School of Communication, School of Law, School of Marine Science. In the second phase, the university proposes to establish School of Engineering and Technology, School of Sustainable Development, and School of Social Sciences and Humanities. As a responsible academic institution, BGU also proposes to introduce School of Odisha Art and Culture and Centre of Tribal Studies to promote the heritage of the region.
New schools such as Engineering and Technology, Medical Science and Genetics, Vocational Education and Development Studies is also on the anvil. The University shall also offer continuing and distance Education programmes as per norms of the Distance Education Council of the Government of India or any other body constituted by the State Government. To improve the quality of education, the University will collaborate with other colleges or Universities, research institutions, industrial associations, professional associations or any other organization, in India or abroad. Focus shall be given to conceptualize, design and develop specific educational and research programmes, training programmes, and exchange programmes for students, faculty members and others. The University shall be open to all persons and shall not discriminate on grounds of gender, race, caste, religion, or domicile.
The rationale for the University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha is to establish an institution of international repute, to create a global learning environment in the state, develop the state and national human resource, to augment the research and professional capacity in the state and build a formidable reputation of the state in the global arena. This also enhances the visibility of the state in higher education at national and international level. The core strength of the university would be its commitment towards developing research capacity and professional programmes in the proposed domains.
The University will specifically satisfy the felt need of the State Higher Education agenda and National Knowledge Commission (NKC) to provide context specific education through regional universities.
To reiterate, our mission is to develop human resource and research capability for equitable and sustainable socio-economic development of the region. The University intends to be an institution of excellence in higher education so as to put the State on the global map.
