New Delhi: October 03: Former finance minister P Chidambaram, lodged in Tihar Jail in INX Media case, filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Thursday for bail.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, before a bench of Justices NV Ramana, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Krishna Murari, referred to the matter and requested to be listed soon. The bench said, Chidambaram’s plea will be sent to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi for taking a call on listing of the matter.
High Court had rejected Chidambaram’s bail plea on Monday, saying that the investigation of the case is in advanced stage and the possibility of influencing the witnesses can not be ruled out.
The court also said that Chidambaram has been a powerful Finance Minister and Home Minister of the country and is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha.
As far as the risk of Chidambaram’s danger of leaving the country is concerned, for this, conditions like submitting passports, issuing lookout notices for him and not going out of the country without the permission of the court can be imposed.
The court said that although there is no scope for Chidambaram to tamper with the evidence, he can certainly influence the witnesses if he is released on bail.
