New Delhi: May 03: : Government is looking for Congress’s support in developing a consensus for a law to give the proposal statutory backing on reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs in promotions.

There are sections in NDA as well as in Congress, who opposed to reservations in promotions. Responding to Congress Member Mallikarjun Kharge’s call for reservation in promotion during a debate on demands for grants for the social justice ministry, Social justice and Empowerment minister Thawar Chand Gehlot said, “If Congress can give in writing that it favours reservation in promotion for members of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, the government will push forward the proposal.

During the UPA regime, a bill to ensure reservation in promotion was approved by the Rajya Sabha during UPA time, but could not go through in the Lok Sabha because of differences among political parties.
