Over 45k infants suffer from severe acute malnutrition in State

Bhubaneswar, March 18: Over 45,000 infants in State are suffering from severe acute  malnutrition and the health situation in the tribal-dominated districts was alarming.

As per an official report, as many as 45,535 infants have been identified by end of December last year as suffering from severe acute malnutrition by the anganwadi workers on basis of WHO criteria.

According to the report of State Women and Child Development Department, the highest number of malnutrition affected infants have been identified in Koraput district (4848) followed by Kalahandi district where 4145 infants have been reported to be suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

The number is 3773 in Nabarangpur, 3551 in Sundergarh, 3341 in Mayurbhanj, 3287 in Keonjhar, 3116 in Rayagada, 2553 in Nuapada, 2330 in Bolangir, 2104 in Malkangiri, 1528 in Kandhamal and 1386 in Bargarh district.In the remaining districts, the number is less than 1000 with Jagatsinghpur registering the lowest 153 cases of severe acute malnutrition in infants.
