Senior BJD leader for white paper of drought, farmer suicide

Bhubaneswar: a senior leader of the ruling Biju Janata Dal in eastern Indian Odisha State has demanded a white paper from the government on drought condition in the state and the suicides by farmers in its wake.

This is a major embarassment for the State government as it has been denying suicides by farmers and share croppers due to drought condition only.

Senior Party leader and a member of Indian parliament Prasanna Patsanion Tuesday said that a white paper will be able to establish the cause of the farmers’ suicides.

Patsani is the fourth leader of the ruling party after colleagues Nagendra Pradhan, Pinaki Mishra and legislator Pramila Mallick who have obliquely blamed the State government for failing to act in time on the issue.

Patsani said that in some cases the moneylenders increased the loan burden by calculating compound interest, and in some sharecroppers have ended lives due to some or other reasons. All the death cases have been linked to crop loss and loan burden. So a white paper on the death cases can only clarify, the MP said.
