Shortage of engineers in the world needs to be addressed: IET

Bhubaneswar, Nov. 23: The Institution of Engineers and Technology (IET), one of the world’s oldest and largest body working for the development of engineering and technology across the globe, on Tuesday launched its Students’ Chapter at the SOA University in the presence of IET’s International Operations Head, Mr. Ian Mercer.

The 144-year-old IET partners with institutions spreading knowledge and providing an edge to the learning of students.

“I am amazed at the enthusiasm for engineering by the young people in India. We want to make engineering exciting for the students,” London-based Mr. Mercer said while adding that IET was keen to make children interested in engineering and technology at a very young age.

Pointing out that there was a shortage of engineers in the world, he said this issue had to be addressed and urged the students of SOA University to come up with new ideas to add value to what they were learning.

The organisation’s Regional Head for South-East Asia, Mr. S.Raghavan said the IET, which is also an international accreditation body and a founding member of the Washington Accord, organizes around 2000 conferences, workshops and events across the world every year.

Mr. Raghavan stressed the need for students to get exposure outside their class rooms so that they could expand their horizon.

He said the students’ chapter in SOA University was IET’s 64th in India while the SOA University was its 24th academic affiliate. IET planned to take up faculty development activities in the university over the next one year while the activities of the student chapter would commence soon, he added.

Dr. J.K.Roy, Chairman of IETs Local Network at Kolkata, Prof. S.S.Nanda, Dean (Students’ Welfare) of SOA University and Prof. Srikant Patnaik, professor in the department of Computer Science and Electronics at the Institute of Technical Education and Research, the faculty of engineering and technology of SOA University also spoke.
